Project website:
http://www.dicom.com.gr/index.php/el/

Project Details: Aim of the proposed CCTIM project is the design, development, production, evaluation, certification and introduction to the market of innovative, composite cool - thermal insulating materials based on the new generation of extruded polystyrene (XPS) with improved vapour permeability (lower water vapour diffusion resistance factor μ) as well as with use of special plasters as a final coating with specific features of low emissivity coefficient ε. The products will be shaped in a way that makes them easily and effectively applicable for the energy upgrade of existing buildings, but will also correspond to the construction techniques of new state of the art buildings. These materials can be used for the thermal insulation of horizontal and inclined roofs according to the EN standards for individual materials and composite insulation solutions, but also for the cladding of vertical structural elements of brick wall and concrete, in the logic of External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) according to ETAG 004.

ERACOBUILD

"THE SQUARE MILE RETROFIT PROJECT"

Project website:
-

Project Details: In order to deliver large-scale retrofit of Europe’s existing housing stock, a much improved understanding needs to be reached as to how an area-based approach can be used in practice as a means of driving down the per-household cost. Key to the cost-effective implementation of such an approach will be an analytical tool which accurately accounts for the interaction of key parameters such as building type, occupancy, local weather, changing infrastructure, suitable upgrade options, available skills (amongst others); a finance model which accurately quantifies risk thereby offering a lower rate of interest and making intervention affordable; and is therefore an effective means of driving take-up amongst target households . While a number of theoretical and practical studies have been undertaken to consider some of these factors either in isolation or in combination, further work is required to develop and test their assumptions at the community level, and to build a systematic methodology which can be applied to large-scale retrofit programmes across Europe. The Square Mile Retrofit Project seeks to address these issues through developing and testing a methodolog on three sample areas of identical size, but with considerable variation in tenure and building type. The project brings together both academic and practical expertise in retrofit from both Northern and Southern EU countries in order to ensure that outcomes can be used to inform the activities of member states that encompass a range of socio-economic, political and climatic environments.

JET-CME

"Solar dynamic phenomena as an astrophysical laboratory: Jets and Coronal Mass Ejections"

Project website
:
http://www.healthcompetence.eu/converis/publicweb/project/3204?show=Person

Project Details: Magnetic fields are produced in differentially rotating and convecting environments, such as in the interior of the sun, other convective stars and also in accretion disks. The produced magnetic fields emerge in the outer atmospheric layers because of magnetic buoyancy producing a plethora of explosive events. This Emergence of Magnetic Flux (EMF) is a fundamental astrophysical phenomenon and the possible driver of the observed, ubiquitous activity in astrophysical plasmas. In the case of the Sun, the Rosette Stone of Astrophysics, EMF is a key process, ultimately linked to the formation of active regions (ARs) at the solar surface (photosphere). Moreover, it is thought that flux emergence contributes considerably to the driving of spectacular phenomena as solar and astrophysical jets, and the Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). Therefore, the main aim of this proposal is to understand the coupling between EMF and fundamental aspects of solar/astrophysical dynamic events. Among the related outstanding questions are the nature of jets and the basic physics behind the onset of dynamic eruptions (e.g. CMEs) in regions of EMF. The proposed research will be carried out using state-of-the-art 3D MHD simulations and high-resolution observations with the aim to provide essentially a first-principle investigation of the relevant physics of the phenomena under study.
